Over the last decade, the use of marijuana for medicinal and/or recreational purposes has been made legal in many countries. From the more widely known partipants like America and Canada to the likes of Australia, New Zealand, Colombia, Belize, Switzerland, Spain and reportedly, even North Korea.
While marijuana’s popularity and range of applications grow, the conversations around it are yet to blossom.
Even in countries where Medicinal Cannabis is legal, people are turning to illicit measures rather than speaking to their doctors. In an article from January this year, 7 News Australia’s Health and Wellbeing team sought out the opinion of Justin Sinclair, Chief Scientific Officer with the Australian Natural Therapeutics Group.
“A number of factors, including concern surrounding possible legal repercussions, judgement from either their doctor or society, or their doctors’ presumed unwillingness to prescribe legal medicinal cannabis were the main reasons for not talking to their doctor,” Mr Sinclair said.

The article focuses on Australian women who suffer from endometriosis, which is a common pain brought on by tissue growing beyond the uterus and causing inflammation and scarring to the host. As of 2021, it affects 1 in 9 of the girls and women in Australia.
Similarly to Medicinal Cannabis, many areas of women’s health have largely gone unresearched and are not common in modern health practices. The lack of certainty around treatment has also contributed to patients looking for alternative remedies, as they opt out of the prescription drugs with long-lasting side effects or surgeries that are currently on offer.
However, as Mr Sinclair suggests, it’s most commonly out of fear of backlash and a lack of education around basic rights and accessibility that cause people not to reach out for Medicinal Cannabis.
